I am a passionate writer and currently a content writer writing for Opera Mini and other media organizations. I have B.A History and International Relations from Ebonyi State University (EBSU). The idea for secession of the former Eastern Nigeria as an Independent Republic of Biafra or Sovereignty State of Biafra should be said to have began immediately after the counter coup of July 29, 1966; and the Pogrom or Igbo genocide whichfollowed thereafter. All these events were the immediate actions that led to the clamour for the secession of Former Southeastern Nigeria by Major Gen. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu on May 30th, 1966. Ojukwu declared the Former southeast region with all it’s contingent shores and continental waters a Sovereign State of Biafra, which includes present States of: Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Abịa, Delta, and some parts of Edo states Nigeria, as part of Biafra.

Before the secession of Biafra, however Northern Nigeria has threatened twice in Nigerian History to secede from Nigeria.These were the two reasons for the secession and the date of it’s occurrence;
Core Northern States or regions
1. In 1956, when Sir Anthony Enahoro moved the motion for Independence of Nigeria in Lagos, the northern Leaders opposed the motion, their reasons were that:

a. Nigeria was not ripe for self government, considering the very fact behind ethnic diversity and differences;
b. That Northern people were not ready to produce enough representatives in the government as a result of lack of Western education.
To this extent, the northern Leaders threatened in Lagos during this 1956 conference that if the motion moved by Enahoro should be considered, that North wouldn’t mind to exit from the rest of Nigeria.
This opposition against the motion for self governance of Nigeria by Nigerians led to strong riots both in Lagos Enugu and Ibadan, and in Kano and Kaduna. The Southern People: Yorubas and Igbos in the conference accused the Northern elders of distrust and disloyalty, as well as having plans to declare a separate country headed by enemies of Independence, while the North on the other hand, accused the south of trying to dominate and put away northerners in the government of the first Republic.
2. On 1st August, 1966: History witnessedanother move of which Northern Nigeria nearly seceded from Nigeria which happened after the counter coup led by Northern Soldiers and the Pogrom of July, 1966. The 1st Coup d’tat of 15 January, 1966 was unconditional tagged an “Igbo Coup” due to perhaps, greater number of Igbos in the coup. The suppression of the coup by J.T.A Ironsi led government, however, seems not to had favored the North, nor provided satisfaction base on how the situation of the coup was handled by Ironsi Government which was not seen satisfied by the northerners themselves. To this extent, the northern soldiers took law upon their own hands by staging the counter coup that killed the First Head of State, Ironsi, and about 200 other Military officers from the East about more than 5000 to 30,000 other soldiers and paramilitary officers from the East.This coup led by Major Gowon, was clearly a revenge, which exited the Igbos and Yorubas from having dominant seats in the Federal Government, as well as the infamous Pogrom that claimed about 50,000 to 150,000 Igbos and caused millions to relocate back to the east abandoning their properties and businesses in Lagos, Kaduna, Maiduguri and Kano(a figure from “Why we Struck”). The situation claimed thousands of former Eastern and Mid Western Nigerians lives who were generally called Igbos.
Subsequently, following the reaction of the coup and the revenge, Northerners, in line with the plan at hand, Yakubu Gowon was to declare the whole of Northern Nigeria an Independent Country called “Arewa Republic” which Flag was to be mounted on 1st August, 1966.

However the plan was distracted by the British government which intervened to warn the Northerners of the two significant consequences of northern secession. These were;
i. That the North despite it’s landmass, is landlocked, thus it will still depend greatly on Southern Nigeria if secede;
ii. That North is just an agricultural land without rich Natural resources, that the south was very rich with Natural cash resources.
To this extent, the British affirmed the north, that if they could terminate the secession, that Gowon could control the rest of Nigeria as a head of State.
It was on this note, according to the popular History Book “Why we Struck”, that while the rest of Nigerians turn on their Radios to hear Gowon announced northern secession on the early morning of August 1st, 1966, instead Gowon proclaimed himself the Head and Military leader of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This was what brought about the ad-hoc Aburi Accord in Ghana where the decisions made was for a confederal government that was going to focuse every regions on their own economy with a weak federal government; one army and one currency. The breach of this decision by Northern leaders was what led to the declaration of Biafra by the Eastern Leaders.

Consequences,it was based on this unexpected actions, and other biased actions and events that follows, led Major Ojukwu to move the motion for the Independent of former Eastern Nigeria and all it’s contingent shelf and territorial waters as the Federal Republic of Biafra which was declared on 30th May, 1967.

The political history and development of Nigeria can not be properly articulated in writings without uncountable pages that involves events of disloyalty and distrust, ethnocentrism, mediocre and nepotism among Nigerians and their leaders which is displaced in the auspices of ethnic loyalties, nepotism and corruption. But that can be corrected by we the youths.
Coexistence of people is the very responsibilities of all human at the detriment of politics, ethnicity and Ideology divides. Nigerians can actually exist together like other people everywhere if the virus called ethnocentrism, distrust, nepotism, bias, and religious fanatism should be eradicated at the glorification of one human race. I am a young youth of Igbo extract, and yet I see no reasons why ethnicity or religion should cut me out or any other youths from associating with my fellow youths and thrive anyway in the country without the fear of mediocre and rejection or being marginalized or deny of opportunities.
The unholy divide
To the Youths of Nigeria anywhere, we might be Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba, we might even be Muslims or Christians, or Traditionalists, but the question is, were we born with any kind of ideologies or was it just inherited or passed to us by our worldly families and community or society? Don’t get me wrong, I’m no atheist, and I am not against religion, but the Creator is generally interested in our coexistence as his creatures and as one human, and a simple way of understanding the Creator’s ways of worship which is also found in all our religious books is believing in our coexistence. We are naturally good people with morality and love.
We can live as one human, that is the point. If we the youths don’t embrace the idea of one human and coexistence, politics, ethnicity and ideologies will continue to keep us frustrated and screwed.
As a Corp member, I served in a multi lingual state, and I have seen youths who believe in coexistence against ethnicity and religion separations that has been politically used against us all. According to John Locke in his Social Contract Theory, he believed that humans are naturally born good people until social influences and vices made their ways into our hearts.
So to this extent, I challenge you as a Nigerian to rethink about the future and better ways to the future. Therefore we will like you to share your views and questions using the Comment Box. Thank you.

I was told that my great grandma, Orie-ekere from Bilode, Ulepa Ntezi was among the most current and successful women of her age. It was recorded that she own a flourished groundnut factory, and she was also an exporter. As a mid age lady, she bought the place we known today as “Obulechi” as part of Bilode. Obulechi is the home of Mr. Eziye, Motion and Atom..these are those I know very well.
Akara_uson and market in general are as old as Eteji origin and settlement itself, therefore we can’t indicate the history as attached to a particular set of people who began the business, it will be a subject of argument and thus very tentative in general.
About Orie-Ekere my great grandma who was named after her business ‘Ekere(groundnut), She was actually among those who to returned home to set back Ode market among other courageous women of her folk, after the Eteji-Ezza war that occurred around 1st decade of 20th century (1909, a year after British colonial officers visited the community…not sure though about the date though, but it’s there in Ntezi archive, you can visit Archival Center in Enugu and demand for our archival documents written by the first wave of colonial masters).
Be it as it may, after the Civil war(Nigeria-Biafran war of 1967-79), my grandma Nne Ozuma Opi (Engr& Captain Ozma mum) at her 50s, were among those who came back from the civil war and reorganized Ode Eteji market, during this period, oral indication holds that she was actually the first to began the sale of Akara udomo mixed up with akara àgwà, as well as gbati-Eyon(pammy), she set her shop occupying southeast part of Ode market, precisely where Workman (Ntezi Youth president) is setting up his business today.
Note : Then, there was no northern settlement of Ode market, across the old main road, the Oviode Shrine forest extent towards this area, thus Ode was only organized in the South side that leads to Biledeba… i.e, the present settlement or Ozoo e gari, erishi, ogbasa(crafish), gbane(oil) among others, were all part of the Oviode Shrine forest, so Ode was limited to the other side that akara people occupy on ordinary day, and Yam people on Ode days.

[10/11, 12:13 PM] Hillary🕎🇮🇱✝️: About the First School, I think the first Primary School was Methodist Primary School Ntezi, established by the Methodist Missionary who moved to set an Evangelical Outpost. Remember that Methodist Church began in Nigeria in 1864, it came through the old Calabar, and by 1900s, it was already in Abakaliki province. By 1920s, Methodist Missionaries were already having strong stool in Ngbo and Ntezi, this occasionally established the Methodist Missionary School Ntezi which is presently called Central Primary School Ntezi around 1921 or there about, .
On the other page of the story, the Catholics whom are known to be favoured missionaries due to their standard and diplomatic blending of Church and tradition. The Catholics began in the Lower Niger area of Onitsha, moving their stool Eastward. The Catholics in Nteziland were said to have come to Ntezi two years after the Methodists. They two commissioned the Catholic Missionary School in Biledeba known today as Community Primary School, Biledeba in 1923. The two schools, however, were controlled by the church and only favor their members, it was kind of biased as children of Traditionalists are not allowed unless converted, therefore, it was not popular.
These two schools were known to have been the oldest schools before the Orri Primary School in Okenyi, Agaga Ntezi The school established by the government, which open its door for every child both Christians and Traditionalists as the case may be. The Orri Primary School was established during the time when Eteji and Lema(Okpoto) were under the same Colonial administrative court. Okenyi was then the center of Orri, that was why the Customary Court was commissioned there. Ishielu East DC would have been established there too, and we would have had our own separate jurisdiction from the Agba People (Orri-Agba).

King Kosoko was the strong and popular king of Lagos who refused to sign a British treaty with Britain when they came to claim Lagos. Before this time, however, Lagos was known as Eko, belonging to Egba Clan of Yorubaland. Kosoko was also a popular slave dealer.
In November 1851 a British party met with Oba Kosoko to present a treaty of British friendly relations along with giving up the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade . The treaty was however, rejected by Kosoko on the critical reason that Lagos was under the command of the Oba of Benin and that it was only that Oba who could deal with foreign powers concerning the status of Lagos.

Before this time, however, Kosoko was sent into exile by Eluti Odibo after his rebellion. Oba Akitoye after being rejected, naively recalled Kosoko to Lagos. Kosoko returned to Lagos aboard the ship of the famous slave trader Jose Domingo Martinez. Akitoye in a quest to placate Kosoko with gifts and granted him the title Oloja of Ereko or owner of Ereko, Kosoko smartly and quickly consolidated his position and found support among many war chiefs and among the Muslim community. Eletu Odibo was concerned with Kosoko’s power consolidation and departed for Badagry. In turn, Akitoye recalled Eletu Odibo from Badagry, leading Kosoko to declare that if Eletu Odibo returned to Lagos, he would “make himself king”.
A war of words ensued between Oba Akitoye and Kosoko sending his crier around Lagos singing “Tell that little child at court yonder to be careful; for if he is not careful he will be punished”. Akitoye deployed his crier singing “I am like a pin firmly driven into the ground, which is always hard to root out but ever remains firm”. Kosoko retorted “I am the digger who always roots out a pin”. The tensions led to an rising named Ogun Olomiro (Salt Water War) by the Kosoko faction in July 1845. The Kosoko faction laid siege to the Oba’s Palace for three weeks. Akitoye eventually accepted defeat, escaped up the lagoon to the north, and was granted safe passage through the Agboyi Creek by Oshodi Tapa , Kosoko’s war captain. Oshodi Tapa explained Akitoye’s escape to Kosoko by saying that Akitoye put his enemies in a trance. Akitoye thereafter arrived in Abeokuta where he was granted asylum. Recognizing Akitoye’s escape as a threat, Kosoko demanded Akitoye’s head from the Egbas who refused Kosoko’s demands. In March 1845, the Egbas provided the now deposed Akitoye with an escort to Badagry, the traditional town of refuge for Lagosians where he rallied his followers and built a partnership with European missionaries and with the British through their Consul John Beecroft.
Consequently, Eletu Odibo was captured in the battle and Kosoko avenged the scattering of his mother’s bones by the Eletu by placing Eletu Odibo in an empty oil barrel, sealing it, setting it alight, and dumping it in the Lagos Lagoon.
After becoming the king of Lagos and the his rebellion to British interest, on December 4, 1851, Consul Beecroft wrote to the Oba of Benin declaring that “Kosoko, by opening fire on a flag of truce, had declared war on England” and therefore had to be replaced by Akitoye. He threatened that Kosoko had till the end of the month to surrender otherwise “Lagos would be totally destroyed by fire”. [10]
On 26 December 1851, in what is now known as the Bombardment of Lagos or Reduction of Lagos, a floater of boats mounted an attack on the Oba’s palace. Kosoko put up a spirited defense but by 28 December 1851 the battle known locally as Ogun Ahoyaya or Ogun Agidingbi (after boiling cannons) was over with Kosoko and his followers fleeing to Ijebu. Akitoye was now installed Oba of Lagos with British support.
On 1 January 1852 Akitoye signed the Treaty between Great Britain and Lagos abolishing the slave trade.
